Taking a Break
Officers Frank Matthews, Richard Jackson and Louis Goss pose on a bench at police headquarters, 407 S. Jefferson Street circa 1955. All three officers were probably beat patrolmen, which meant that they were assigned a few blocks of town to walk along during a shift. After officers earned it, they were assigned a patrol car to drive.
The uniforms at the time of the photograph were very simple. The collar brass simply read “PD.” They wore a badge and a whistle.
Matthews retired as a sergeant, Jackson as a lieutenant, and Goss as chief.
